2020 saw the world upheaved as the COVID-19 pandemic and a continued climate crisis brought on unprecedented challenges and risks. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2021 finds infectious diseases at the top among the highest impact risks of the next decade, with potentially severe human and economic cost. Among the highest likelihood risks are extreme weather, climate action failure and human-led environmental damage, all of which are closely associated with ESG (environmental, social and governance), with extreme weather being in the top spot for the past five years.
In the face of global economic fragility and volatile markets, investors and stakeholders attach an increasing importance to the impact of ESG performance on enterprises’ credit worthiness, operation and risk management. Continuing its efforts to promote high corporate governance standards and ESG among Hong Kong-listed companies, in December 2020 the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong published its latest review of issuers’ corporate governance practices and market practitioners’ insights. The review provides guidance to issuers on possible improvements to their corporate governance practices, with an emphasis on the independent element of the independent non-executive directors (INEDs), their availability and time commitment, as well as board diversity. The practitioners’ insights presents a collection of experiences shared by market practitioners, with an aim of encouraging directors of listed companies to think holistically about integrating ESG factors into their business strategy to achieve better risk management, operational efficiency and business development for their organizations.
As one of the most influential business magazines in Hong Kong with a global vision and Greater China connection, the Chinese Edition of Bloomberg Businessweek keeps a keen focus on the development of ESG standards. We welcome Deloitte as our partner again this year in co-presenting the third year of ESG Leading Enterprise Awards. By recognizing Hong Kong-listed companies and asset management companies with outstanding ESG performance, the Awards aims at encouraging enterprises to adopt ESG practices strategically to cope with the “new normal” business environment, ultimately to foster a sustainable business culture with positive impact on the environment and society.

國際局勢與營商環境持續變化，市場與投資者愈趨關注在波動的市況下，ESG 對企業的聲譽、表現及風險管理的影響。香港交易所為推動良好企業管治及 ESG 管理，在2020年12月發佈有關發行人企業管治常規的最新檢討，以及業界人士觀點。檢討報告就獨立非執行董事的高度獨立及參與程度，與董事會多元化等範疇作出指引；而透過不同市場人士所分享的經驗，可協助管理層全面分析 ESG 對企業在風險管理、營運效率及業務發展中的重要性。
作為區內具國際視野及影響力的財經雜誌，《彭博商業周刊/中文版》一直聚焦 ESG 的發展，今年再度與德勤攜手舉辦第三屆「ESG 領先企業大獎」，旨在表揚在 ESG 有傑出表現的上市公司與資產管理機構，鼓勵企業在新常態中靈活實踐 ESG 策略，共同推動對環境和社會產生正面影響的可持續發展。

The Awards comprises three categories including the “ESG Leading Enterprise Awards,” “Leading ESG Initiative Awards” and “Theme Awards". A panel of professional judges evaluated submissions based on participating enterprises’ ESG governance mechanisms, goals and performance, as well as their environmental and social initiatives, etc., following a rigorous judging procedure advised by Deloitte that ensures credibility and objectivity.
評選活動共設 「ESG 領先企業」、「ESG 領先項目」及「主題獎項」三個奬項類別，評審框架由德勤協助制定，再由獨立評審團根據參選企業的 ESG 管治機制、目標、績效、環保及社區項目等範疇之表現作評審，以確保公信力及客觀性。
